What is a BAS Lodgement?

Wondering how to fill out a BAS Tax Return , or even what the heck is a BAS? What you need is a BAS guide…and that is what we are! The definition of a BAS is a reporting statement used by businesses in Australia to determine and pay a number of tax obligations, including GST, pay as you go (PAYG) instalments, PAYG withholding and fringe benefits tax to the Australian Taxation Office. A BAS reporting frequency can vary from monthly, quarterly or annually.

Who Needs To Fill Out a Business Activity Statement?

A business is required to lodge a business activity statement if it is registered for GST or have other tax obligations such as PAYG instalments, PAYG withholding, fringe benefits tax instalments, luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax or fuel tax credits.

When Does BAS Apply After Registering for GST?

Businesses will be liable for BAS reporting requirements and filing once they have completed their GST registration. When the profit (turnover) of a business reaches $75,000, then registering for GST becomes compulsory. That being said, companies are allowed to claim back the GST paid on business expenses. Hence, some companies volunteer to register for GST even when the turnover is less than $75,000. After registering for GST, your company becomes responsible for collecting GST from your clients and customers. In this regard, BAS is the approach to reporting the collection of GST and the payment you are liable for and entitled to pay the Australian Taxation Office.

What Does Filling Out a BAS Cover?

Depending on the type of business you operate, the information you include in the Business Activity Statement of your business will vary accordingly. In general, BAS covers the following:

For more information on what BAS covers for your nature of business, please visit the Australian Tax Office website.

How Regularly Do I Have to Lodge a BAS?

The filing frequency depends on the size and nature of your business. For small businesses, BAS has to be filed on a quarterly basis, by the 28th of each quarter to be precise. For corporations with turnover reaching or exceeding $20 million, or when more than $25,000 is withheld in PAYG Withholding from wages, then the BAS has to be filed on a monthly basis, on the 21st of each month. Businesses that voluntarily registered for GST can choose to file annualy.
